How Burton Snowboards Achieves Sustainability Through Waste Sorting

Burton Snowboards has established comprehensive sustainability objectives that align environmental responsibility with product innovation and operational transparency. Their goals include minimizing environmental impact, reducing carbon emissions, increasing use of sustainable and recycled materials, and designing products to be durable repairable and recyclable.

By setting measurable targets around emissions and material use Burton aims to support a stable climate and healthier ecosystems while advancing circularity across its products and packaging. Fractional progress indicators show achievements such as increased recycled content in products, elimination of harmful chemicals, expansion of sustainable cotton use achieving bluesign certification across materials and commitments to fair labor practices and broader climate action.

Burton also pursues advocacy efforts and collaboration with industry partners to drive systemic environmental improvements and aims to continue reducing greenhouse gas emissions from facilities, products and supply chain operations. Burton's sustainability strategy emphasizes that responsible material selection and lifecycle thinking are core to their purpose and values as a certified B Corporation committed to people planet and the sport of snowboarding.

Burton Snowboards Case Study

At Burton's eco-friendly headquarters in Burlington Vermont a comprehensive recycling system was implemented using Recycle Away's Large Simple Sort Recycling Stations. These stations were selected to effectively separate trash compost and recycling streams across Burton's workspace.

A key part of the solution involved providing Burton's team with the exact dimensions for graphics that would be affixed to the top panels of each container. These sign panels played a crucial role in guiding users to sort waste correctly by clearly identifying the intended output stream for each bin.

Well-designed and properly sized sign panels help reinforce correct disposal behaviors reduce stream contamination and engage employees with sustainability practices right at the point of decision. The bins became an extension of Burton's broader sustainability commitment by making waste diversion intuitive visible and aligned with their internal recycling and waste reduction goals.

Clear signage on recycling and waste containers is essential to achieve high diversion rates and reduce contamination. When signage is integrated with the bin infrastructure it communicates exactly what materials go where at the moment people dispose of their waste.

This visual guidance supports sustainable practices without requiring repeated training or reminders. In Burton's installation clear labeling on the top panels helped employees understand and habitually follow proper sorting protocols contributing to more effective recycling outcomes that support overall environmental goals.
