The Tani Cantil Sakauye Sacramento County Courthouse is reshaping downtown Sacramento with a bold blend of sustainable design, modern functionality, and public accessibility. Designed to meet LEED standards, this courthouse demonstrates how civic architecture can support environmental responsibility while serving the public with efficiency and dignity.
A New Icon for Sacramento
Rising 18 stories above downtown, the courthouse contains 53 courtrooms and more than half a million square feet of space. The building replaces the aging Gordon D. Schaber Courthouse and consolidates court operations that were previously spread across multiple facilities. This improves security, simplifies circulation, and creates a more user-friendly experience for judges, staff, jurors, and the public. It occupies a full city block and serves as a prominent civic anchor in the heart of Sacramento.
Sustainability at the Core
Sustainability guided the project from its earliest planning stages. The courthouse was designed to achieve LEED certification through a combination of high-performance systems, efficient resource use, and thoughtful architectural strategies.
Since the goal was sustainability, the team at the courthouse knew to prioritize waste and recycling from the beginning of the process. From the start, Recycle Away provided options to be reviewed both for form and function. After extensive review from all stakeholders, the Metro bins were selected in a Hammered Copper finish with custom decals. Because these bins were included in the design process from the beginning, they perfectly meet the aesthetic and design specifications, while also meeting the functional needs for effective waste management.
Other key sustainable features include:
- Extensive daylighting that brings natural light into public corridors and shared spaces, reducing energy demand and improving occupant comfort
- A high-performance building envelope that supports thermal efficiency and long-term durability
- Energy- and water-efficient mechanical systems that lower operating costs and environmental impact
By pursuing LEED certification, the courthouse aligns with Sacramento’s broader commitment to climate action and responsible development.
A Lasting Civic Investment
The Tani Cantil Sakauye Sacramento County Courthouse is more than a place for legal proceedings. It is a long-term investment in sustainability, public service, and the future of Sacramento’s civic identity. By combining LEED-driven design with architectural clarity and community focus, the courthouse sets a new standard for public buildings in California.
